Trend Micro Antivirus Review 2024: Pricing, Plan, Features, Pros And Cons Is It Good Enough?

Trend Micro Antivirus Review

Trend Micro Antivirus Review Trend Micro is a well-known antivirus software that offers a variety of antimalware applications for different platforms. What sets it apart from other antivirus software is that two of its products are compatible with Chrome OS, which is quite unusual. In addition to its antivirus capabilities, Trend Micro also provides a free version and a 30-day money-back guarantee. One of the standout features of this software is its ransomware protection and web monitoring functionalities.

However, it’s worth noting that identity theft protection is not included in the antivirus programs, and the VPN feature is only available in the top-tier plan. In this comprehensive review of Trend Micro antivirus, we will cover everything you need to know about the product.

This includes discussing the advantages and disadvantages, highlighting the security features, and providing an overview of the plans and pricing options. By the end of this review, you should be able to determine whether Trend Micro is the right choice for your security needs.

Trend Micro Antivirus Review

Trend Micro offers a highly effective anti-malware scanner at an affordable price, although its supplementary features lack consistency. By utilizing a blend of signature-based scanning and cutting-edge machine-learning methods, its real-time antivirus scanner achieves outstanding results in malware detection. During my testing, it successfully detected nearly all the test malware files without causing any noticeable slowdown to my computer.

Trend Micro’s additional security features include:

  • Browser security extension.
  • PC tune-up.
  • Dark web monitoring.
  • Identity theft protection.
  • Data theft protection.
  • Password manager.
  • VPN.
  • Parental controls.
  • Social media privacy scanner.

Trend Micro’s social Media Scanner & browser security features

I am a fan of Trend Micro’s social media scanner and browser security features, although I find some of its additional features to be quite disappointing. The optimization tools do not offer any significant advantages over what PCs and Macs can already do, and the VPN and password manager are rather basic in their functionality. However, on the whole, Trend Micro delivers reliable and reasonably priced malware protection through a user-friendly interface. They also provide a free 30-day trial for all plans, and offer a 30-day money-back guarantee with every purchase.

Trend Micro pros and cons

Trend Micro Full Review

Trend Micro offers outstanding malware scanning and real-time protection. Additionally, the program provides useful privacy features that enhance security in both online and offline settings. However, when compared to the leading antivirus software available, Trend Micro’s supplementary features may not be as robust. Nonetheless, it is a highly user-friendly product with powerful core functionalities, and its various plans are well-suited to meet the requirements of most users.

Trend Micro Security Features

When it comes to protecting your digital devices, Trend Micro offers a wide range of security features that can help keep you safe from online threats. Their antivirus software is packed with advanced features such as real-time scanning, web protection, and email filtering to ensure that your devices are protected from malware, ransomware, and other malicious attacks.

In addition, Trend Micro also provides a password manager, which can help you securely store and manage your passwords across different platforms. With their easy-to-use interface and comprehensive security features, Trend Micro is definitely worth considering for your antivirus needs. However, like any product, there are pros and cons to consider. It’s always a good idea to read reviews and compare pricing and plans before making a decision on which antivirus software is right for you.

Virus Scanner

The virus scanner offered by Trend Micro is highly effective in detecting and preventing malware. It utilizes both signature-based scanning, where files are compared against Trend Micro’s extensive virus database, and machine learning. This combination of techniques enables it to safeguard against not only known malware but also zero-day threats and malware variants that can bypass conventional scanners. Trend Micro offers three different scan options for users to choose from.

Avaiable Scanners

  • Quick Scan: Scans areas of your computer where security risks are typically found, such as your system folders, background processes, and registry.
  • Full Scan: Scans the entire disk (not including files that are password protected or encrypted).
  • Custom Scan: Scans files or folders of your choice.

Evaluate Various Scanning Options

In order to evaluate the various scanning options, I acquired a large archive comprising of almost 1,000 malware samples. These included viruses, worms, ransomware, spyware, trojans, adware, keyloggers, rootkits, and cryptojackers. To ensure thorough testing, I concealed the samples in different locations, including my system folders and registry.

Trend Micro’s Quick Scan Way

I must admit that Trend Micro’s quick scan performed exceptionally well on my computer. It completed the scan within just 3 minutes, which is quite remarkable considering that some other antivirus products take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes for a similar quick scan. Furthermore, the quick scan successfully detected every single malicious sample present in my critical folders, which is truly impressive.

Trend Micro’s Ability

Afterwards, I proceeded to run a complete scan using Trend Micro, and to my surprise, it only took 40 minutes – significantly faster than McAfee’s one-hour scan. I was impressed with Trend Micro’s ability to detect almost all of the malware on my disk, which is comparable to leading competitors like Norton and Bitdefender. Additionally, running the scan did not impact the speed of my computer; I was still able to stream HD video without any issues.

Level Of Protection Sensitivity

Furthermore, the scanner offers various useful features. Users have the option to adjust the level of protection sensitivity, modify notification settings, and even request Trend Micro to automatically delete unsafe files and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs). Alternatively, users can choose to deactivate the machine-learning aspect of the scanner if desired.

Trend Micro

The malware scanner provided by Trend Micro is both speedy and potent, without causing any excessive strain on system resources. Although its detection rates are not flawless, they come very close. Additionally, compared to other antivirus programs like VIPRE and McAfee, Trend Micro’s scanner is significantly faster. Furthermore, it offers a multitude of convenient settings for users who desire the option to customize their antivirus experience.

Real-Time Protection

Trend Micro’s real-time malware protection is both simple yet powerful. It actively observes your online activities and prevents any harmful files or attachments from being downloaded. Furthermore, it constantly supervises the files on your desktop and prohibits them from making any modifications to your computer. Trend Micro’s real-time protection has the ability to safeguard against the following threats:

  • Malware.
  • Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPS).
  • Ransomware.
  • Exploits.

The scanner is just as effective as the real-time protection. To put it to the test, I tried to download the same archive from my malware scan (which had almost 1,000 samples). Trend Micro’s real-time scanner successfully identified every single malware file, stopping them from being downloaded and potentially harming my PC.

I conducted a test on Trend Micro’s real-time protection by using WICAR’s database of web-based exploits. I was amazed to see that Trend Micro successfully intercepted all the exploit attacks, preventing them from harming my browser and plugins. In conclusion, Trend Micro’s real-time protection is highly efficient in safeguarding your PC from running malicious files.

Phishing / Web Protection

Trend Micro’s web protection is highly effective when it comes to preventing access to malicious and fraudulent websites. It achieves this by automatically cross-referencing each site you attempt to visit with an extensive online database of blacklisted sites. If the website you are trying to access is listed in the database, Trend Micro will prevent access.

To evaluate the effectiveness of the protection, I conducted tests using Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. I deliberately visited numerous sample phishing sites, and without fail, Trend Micro successfully blocked my access each time. Notably, it even managed to block access to websites that the default protections on popular web browsers such as Chrome and Firefox were unable to detect and block.

I am also particularly fond of the user-friendly feature that allows for easy whitelisting of safe websites. Trend Micro conveniently presents a small dialogue box whenever it blocks a website, giving the option to disregard its warning and proceed to the site, or even add it to the whitelist permanently. In general, I was highly impressed with Trend Micro’s anti-phishing protection. It is incredibly user-friendly and effectively blocked all of the phishing sites during my testing.

PC Health Check-Up

Trend Micro offers PC Health Check-Up, a system tune-up feature exclusive to Windows. This feature enhances your PC’s performance in six different ways. With a simple click, PC Tune-Up can:

  • Fix Security Vulnerabilities. Checks if your OS is up to date and if the computer’s firewall settings are secure.
  • Remove Potentially Incompatible Programs. Uninstalls programs that aren’t compatible with Trend Micro (such as other antivirus programs).
  • Reduce Computer Startup Time. Changes which programs boot up when you log into your PC.
  • Restore Disk Space. Empties the recycle bin, deletes duplicate files, and cleans temporary folders.
  • Clean Privacy Data. Removes personal data from Windows, messenger applications, and media players.
  • Protect Browser Passwords. Alerts you to passwords saved in your browser, and not Trend Micro’s password manager.

Satisfying Particular Features

I was not satisfied with this particular feature. The PC Health Check-Up completed a quick scan of my computer within a few seconds, but it did not have the capability to free up any storage space. On the other hand, when I utilized the built-in Windows Disk Cleanup app on my PC, it successfully cleared out nearly 300 MB of space.

Reduce Computer Startup Time Feature

The Reduce Computer Startup Time feature identifies programs that can be manually disabled from launching at startup in order to enhance startup speeds. However, since this functionality is already available by default on both Windows and Mac systems, it does not contribute significantly to the tune-up feature.

Trend Micro’s PC Health Check-Up

In general, Trend Micro’s PC Health Check-Up is not very impressive. Most of its features can be found on Windows by default, and they tend to work better there. The main advantage of PC Tune-Up is that it consolidates all optimization features in one location, but other than that, you could just rely on your system’s built-in clean-up features.

Privacy Scanner

Trend Micro offers a range of tools to enhance privacy. With the Privacy Scanner, you have the ability to customize your web browser and social media privacy settings across multiple platforms and browsers. To utilize this feature on your social media profiles, simply download the Trend Micro Toolbar and ensure that you are logged into the specific social media account you want to scan. Once activated, Trend Micro will examine the selected account and present a convenient pop-up window that enables you to promptly address any identified privacy issues.

Trend Micro Designed Identify

The Privacy Scanner from Trend Micro is designed to identify the following:

  • Who can see your personal information.
  • If your social media profile appears on search engines.
  • Who can look you up using your email address.
  • Who can look you up using your phone number.
  • If advertisers can display targeted ads based on your activity.

Trend Micro Toolbar Test

I acquired the Trend Micro Toolbar and put it to the test. I conducted scans on my Chrome browser as well as my Facebook, X, and LinkedIn profiles.

Easy option to customize

The scan was completed in just one minute, providing a comprehensive list of privacy concerns along with an easy option to customize them. In general, this feature is highly convenient, particularly considering that numerous social media platforms often make it challenging to locate, comprehend, or modify privacy settings. However, the browser scanning aspect of the privacy scanner proved to be less impressive. During my testing, it only functioned correctly with Firefox, despite being purportedly compatible with Chrome as well.

Trend Micro Straightforward Process

Unfortunately, fixing this issue with Trend Micro was not a straightforward process. When I attempted to follow the instructions provided by clicking on “Click here for easy instructions to fix the problem,” I was redirected to an irrelevant page.

After some time, I finally discovered the correct page, which informed me that it is not possible to run the privacy scanner on Google Chrome while signed into a Google account. Additionally, the page provided guidance on how to sign out of my Google account, although I personally believe that most users will not require this information. On Firefox, Trend Micro allowed me to make choices regarding tracking and password saving.

Anti-phishing protections

Furthermore, I could enable or disable the built-in anti-phishing protections. While these features are indeed beneficial, they can be easily accessed through the web browser’s own settings without the need for Trend Micro. That being said, the social media protections offered by the Privacy Scanner are quite valuable, particularly if you struggle with locating and modifying privacy settings across your various social media accounts.

Trend Micro ID Security (Mobile Only)

Trend Micro ID Security performs continuous scanning of the dark web and promptly notifies you in case it detects any of your personally identifiable information (PII), such as:

  • Email addresses.
  • Passwords.
  • Credit card numbers.
  • Bank account numbers.
  • Passport information.

Trend Micro Technology

While Norton is more impressive due to its utilization of AI technology and coverage of additional types of information including insurance numbers, Trend Micro surpasses TotalAV. Unlike TotalAV which solely relies on Have I Been Pwned’s database for scanning breached emails, Trend Micro’s data monitor is equipped to send leak alerts directly to your email or mobile device upon detection of a breach.

Trend Micro Gives Stronger Passwords

In the event of a breach, it not only informs you about the leaked information but also guides you in securing each compromised account with a stronger password. Furthermore, it conveniently provides a hyperlink to the breached website so that you can swiftly make the necessary changes.

Trend Micro my personal experience

Based on my personal experience, the email breach scanner proved to be effective. To conduct a test, I decided to create a new email address and utilized it for signing up on numerous dubious websites found on the internet. As expected, when I employed ID Security to search for any breaches, it identified 20 distinct sites that had exposed my email address. I did find it slightly peculiar that Trend Micro ID Security is exclusively accessible on Android and iOS platforms. PC and Mac users are only provided with a basic email scanner via Trend Micro’s website.

Trend Micro’s ID Security

In general, Trend Micro’s ID Security is a comprehensive solution. It provides more features compared to similar products offered by its competitors, although it falls short when compared to Norton’s offering. The ability to verify if your emails, passwords, credit card numbers, and other personal details have been compromised is highly beneficial. However, for individuals prioritizing identity protection, it would be advisable to select a service that includes live support and safeguards a wider range of information.

Password Manager

Trend Micro’s password manager provides a secure method for storing confidential information. I appreciate its utilization of the highest level of encryption, 256-bit AES, which is regarded as the most robust option. However, I encountered challenges with its user-friendliness and overall complexity. Nevertheless, it does offer a range of beneficial features.

Beneficial Features

  • Unlimited password storage (premium version).
  • Password generator.
  • Two-factor authentication.
  • Automatic form filler.
  • Password auditing.
  • Biometric logins.
  • Secure notes.

Avaiable Formats

The password manager is offered in two formats – as a browser extension and as an app. The browser-based version comes along with Trend Micro ID Protection, which includes various privacy features, an ad blocker, and a password manager.

Personally, I am a strong advocate of bundling, so I think this is an excellent offering. However, the app version does not match up to the same standard. Unfortunately, I discovered that the app version does not synchronize with the extension.

After saving numerous passwords via the app and subsequently adding the browser version, I was disappointed to find that my vault was completely empty. Additionally, despite claiming compatibility with both Windows and Mac systems, I could only get the mobile version of the app to function properly.

Trend Micro’s Knowledge Protocol

Trend Micro’s password manager utilizes a zero-knowledge protocol, which implies that if you happen to forget your master password, it will not be possible to reset it. While this is advantageous for security reasons, it can pose an issue if you do indeed forget the password since there are no account recovery alternatives available. In my opinion, this can be seen as a limitation. In contrast, other well-known password managers such as LastPass and Dashlane offer multiple account recovery options in case you lose access to your account.

Trend Micro’s Functions

The password storage and auto-fill function is quite simple, but it functions effectively. Once you sign into a website, Trend Micro will prompt you to save your login information. When you revisit a saved site, a small dialogue box will appear asking if you want to login. It is speedy and convenient, and it successfully identified all of my saved websites during testing.

Trend Micro Passphrase Generator

In addition to other functionalities, Trend Micro offers a password generator that allows you to create passwords with 8 to 20 characters. These passwords can include uppercase or lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Although this feature is helpful, it lacks a passphrase generator which is available in Bitwarden.

Trend Micro’s Password Saving Capabilities

While Trend Micro’s password manager performs the basic functions well, it falls short in terms of features when compared to leading products in the market. It provides convenient password saving and autofill capabilities, along with a functional password generator that I find useful. However, the user interface is not very intuitive and it doesn’t offer as many advanced features as competitors like 1Password.

Parental Controls

Trend Micro’s parental controls may be simple, yet they are highly user-friendly. However, they do not offer the extensive range of features found in dedicated parental control tools. Nevertheless, you can still utilize them for the following purposes:

  • Block websites.
  • Set time limits on internet access, specific apps, or whole devices.
  • Block applications.
  • Get reports on user activities.

Using the startup wizard, you can effortlessly navigate through the setup process and specify which websites or applications you would like to block. Additionally, there are various age presets available that allow Trend Micro to configure everything for you.

Limiting Computer Usage

In my case, I established a fabricated profile for a child between the ages of 8 and 12, limiting their computer usage to only 4 hours per day and solely on weekends. Furthermore, I prevented this test profile from accessing specific applications stored on my hard drive.

Website Filtering & Spam Blocking

The website filtering worked pretty well. It can block 31 categories of websites, including:

  • Adult websites.
  • Communication media websites.
  • Controversial websites.
  • Shopping websites.
  • Entertainment websites.

Trend Micro Options Within The Notification

Upon attempting to access a website that was forbidden, I encountered an issue wherein the page failed to load. Instead, Trend Micro presented a notification in the lower corner of my screen, informing me that the website had been obstructed. In the event that you choose to click on either the “Temporarily allow” or “Permanently allow” options within this notification. it will prompt you to enter your account password before granting access to the blocked website. Undoubtedly, this is an incredibly beneficial feature, and I anticipate that numerous parents will value the capability to temporarily whitelist websites using this method.

Trend Micro Filter Out Weaponry

Trend Micro’s content filtering showed inconsistency in its performance. While it effectively blocked access to certain categories, such as adult websites, it struggled with others. For instance, when attempting to filter out content related to “weaponry,” I was still able to access numerous websites and videos about guns.

Parental Control App

However, it is worth noting that blocking dangerous YouTube videos is a challenge for any parental control app. Qustodio, for instance, only offers the option of completely blocking YouTube access or monitoring the videos your children have watched; it does not allow you to block specific videos. Considering this, I suggest reading our blog post on “keeping kids safe on YouTube” for valuable tips. On the other hand, Trend Micro’s image search filter failed to function adequately.

Safe Search Results

Despite enabling the filter, I was still able to view adult images on Google Images. In contrast, other parental control tools like Net Nanny can detect when a child enters restricted words into Google Images and replace them with # symbols, thereby preventing any inappropriate images from appearing in search results.

Time Restrictions

The time restrictions were highly effective – I was able to completely limit the amount of time children can spend on a device and schedule specific times for internet access. If your child requires more online time, you can easily add an extra hour by entering your password. Similarly, when their designated hours of computer/device use are coming to an end, a timer will appear to inform them that they have 5 minutes before they are logged out. To regain access to the device, you will need to enter your password.

Program Access controls

You can also enter your password during the 5-minute countdown to allow an additional hour. The Program Access controls were also very successful. I tested this feature with various applications, including video games, and each time Trend Micro effectively blocked them. I even attempted to deceive the app blocker by changing the names of blocked applications, relocating them, deleting them, and reinstalling them, but none of these methods were successful.

Trend Micro Parental Controls Report

I found the parental controls report screen provided by Trend Micro to be disappointing. It only notifies you about attempts to access blocked websites, meaning that if your child is visiting other inappropriate websites that haven’t been filtered yet, you won’t know about it.

Trend Micro Offer A Comprehensive Reports

Additionally, it doesn’t track application usage, so there’s no way to monitor what your child is doing with their time, such as playing video games or using educational apps. In contrast, the top-rated parental control programs available in the market offer comprehensive reports that display every website visited by your child, every attempted app access, and the duration spent on each app.

Trend Micro’s Worth Highlighting

These features are extremely valuable for parents, making it unfortunate that they are absent from Trend Micro’s product. Overall, I would describe Trend Micro’s parental controls as average. The content filtering is inconsistent and the report screen lacks informative details. However, there are some positive aspects worth highlighting: it is very user-friendly with customizable web-filtering presets, automatic age-based protections, and a dependable application blocker.

Trend Micro VPN

Trend Micro includes a VPN known as VPN Proxy One Pro, which is quite satisfactory. While it has its merits in terms of speed and user-friendliness, there are certain drawbacks to consider. Specifically, it lacks important features and tends to collect excessive amounts of data.

Trend Micro Connection Speeds

This VPN is exclusively available with Trend Micro’s highest-priced plan called Premium Security Suite, but you can also purchase a standalone subscription. VPN Proxy One Pro offers remarkable speeds, particularly for a VPN provided by an antivirus company. It allows users to select between the WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols, enabling them to choose the one that suits their needs best. I experienced minimal impact on my connection speeds when connected to a local server – websites loaded instantly, and videos began playing within 2 seconds without any buffering issues.

Trend Micro top-notch security features

Even when connected to a server located halfway across the globe, my speeds were only about 20% slower. Nevertheless, videos still loaded within 2-3 seconds, and file downloads were reasonably fast. Below is the speed of my connection while connected to my local network in Canada:

VPN Proxy Pro One offers top-notch security features to protect your data. It employs 256-bit AES encryption, which is also utilized by banks and militaries. Additionally, it includes an ad blocker and provides the option for automatic launch when detecting an unsecured Wi-Fi connection.

Trend Micro Explicitly State

Alternatively, users can enable the VPN to launch upon detecting a specific Wi-Fi network, such as their home network. Although VPN Proxy Pro One does not explicitly state if it has leak protection, I conducted tests on each server location and found no leaks. Only the VPN IP address was displayed instead of my own IP address.

Trend Micro

However, VPN Proxy Pro One has several drawbacks that I find unfavorable. Firstly, it lacks a kill switch feature, which disconnects you from the internet in case of a dropped VPN connection to prevent accidental data leakage. Additionally, I am not fond of its privacy policy, which states that the VPN logs information such as your location, session duration, in-app purchases, and visited websites (with the intention of protecting users from web-based threats and network hacking attacks).

Trend Micro Successfully Attempt Logs

Moreover, locating the privacy policy for this VPN is not straightforward, and even when found, the language used is too ambiguous. Personally, I prefer a VPN with a stringent no-logs policy that does not log any VPN traffic, such as ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access. Another drawback became evident when I attempted to stream content. Despite connecting to a server in my country and attempting to log into my Paramount+ and Amazon Prime accounts, I was unable to gain access. The only service that worked successfully for me was Netflix.

Trend Micro Limited Operating

Furthermore, VPN Proxy Pro One’s server network is quite limited, operating in only 15+ countries. As a result, numerous users are unable to connect to a server in their home country or a neighboring country in order to achieve optimal speeds. Additionally, I am disappointed by the absence of advanced features such as split-tunneling and obfuscation tools in this VPN.

Trend Micro Top-Tier Standalone VPN

In contrast, there are other antivirus programs that include a more comprehensive range of security measures and offer a VPN as part of their internet security suites. In general, VPN Proxy Pro One is a fast and user-friendly VPN. However, it does not have a kill switch feature and its privacy policy is only average. Furthermore, it lacks the additional features that you would find with a top-tier standalone VPN provider.

Additional Features

Apart from the features stated earlier, Trend Micro includes a range of useful supplementary features.

  • Pay Guard. Opens a secure browser window for online banking or shopping (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
  • Data Theft Prevention. Blocks sensitive data such as credit card numbers from being sent over the internet.
  • Folder Shield. Adds extra security to selected folders to stop ransomware from encrypting them.
  • Trend Micro Vault. Stores sensitive files in a password-protected folder.
  • Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit. Generates troubleshooting logs, adds real-time scanning exceptions, reboots your PC into safe mode, and more.
  • Secure Erase. Deletes a file securely, so it can never be recovered (only available on the Premium SecurityMaximum Security, and Internet Security plans).
  • Firewall Booster. Enhances Windows’ built-in firewall and blocks botnets from hijacking your PC.

Some Extra Features

A few of these extra features are quite impressive. When accessing a banking or finance website, Pay Guard will prompt you to proceed using the secure browser in order to safeguard against exploit attacks and pop-ups. While TotalAV and Avira do have secure browsers, they do not offer the same convenient one-click functionality that Pay Guard does.

Trend Micro’s Secure Files

During my tests, Pay Guard successfully worked with major international financial sites, although I did not receive a recommendation to use Pay Guard when trying to visit my regional bank’s website. I am also fond of Trend Micro’s secure erase feature and secure file vault; however, I am uncertain if the firewall booster, folder shield, and data theft prevention live up to their advertised capabilities. Regardless, I appreciate the fact that Trend Micro offers numerous additional features to enhance security.

Trend Micro Plans and Pricing

Trend Micro provides a range of four plans. The first plan, called Antivirus+ Security, is designed for Windows users (Mac users can opt for the equivalent Antivirus for Mac plan). Another plan, known as Internet Security, offers slightly more advanced features and is exclusively available for Windows. The premium plans, Maximum Security and Premium Security Suite, are compatible with PCs, Macs, Androids, iOS devices, and Chromebooks.

While Trend Micro does not provide a free plan, it does include some complimentary features like House Call, an online security scan, and the Safe Filter for Kids browser extension. All of Trend Micro’s packages require a one- or two-year subscription for purchase. Nevertheless, the company offers a 30-day free trial on all plans and provides a 30-day money-back guarantee with every purchase.

Internet Security — Advanced PC Protection

Internet Security includes all of the features included in Antivirus+ Security, as well as:

  • Parental controls.
  • Social media privacy protection.
  • PC optimization tool.
  • Protection for up to 3 PCs.

The price of this package is excellent when you take into account the numerous features it provides (more than the comparably priced Panda Dome Advanced package). It is a highly suitable choice for a family in need of protection for up to 3 PCs. However, it is disappointing that this plan is exclusively offered to Windows users, particularly when competitors such as Norton offer multi-platform protection on their lower-tier plans.

Maximum Security — Advanced Multi-Device Plan

Maximum Security has all of the features included in Internet Security, plus:

  • Password manager.
  • Mobile protection.
  • Protection on up to 5 devices.

This plan offers comprehensive protection for multiple devices, including Android and iOS mobile devices, as well as Windows, Mac, and Chromebook (yes, there are antivirus programs available for ChromeOS). It is ideal for individuals seeking protection across various platforms.

Premium Security Suite — Premium Multi-Device Plan

Premium Security Suite is Trend Micro’s most comprehensive plan. It includes everything offered in Maximum Security, plus:

  • Dark web/ID theft monitoring.
  • Personal VPN.
  • Protection on up to 10 devices.

Regrettably, the VPN provided by Trend Micro has some problems, which slightly diminishes the attractiveness of their premium plan. Additionally, there are other plans available at a similar price point that offer much more valuable additional features.

For instance, Norton 360 provides features such as ID verification and credit monitoring, protection against stolen wallets, and reimbursement for stolen funds. Nevertheless, Premium Security Suite is a suitable choice if you require comprehensive online security for up to 10 devices in your household.

Trend Micro Ease of Use and Setup

Setting up and using Trend Micro is incredibly straightforward. It took me less than 5 minutes to install, and once it was up and running, I immediately accessed a user-friendly interface (UI) with clearly organized icons representing the main features.

How to Install Trend Micro (Just 3 Simple Steps)

  • Step 1. Sign up for a Trend Micro plan (Premium Security gets you the best protection).
  • Step 2. Download and install the app. You’ll be provided with a link to download the program after paying, and given a code that you’ll need to enter to activate the product.
  • Step 3. Open the app, enter your code, and get protected.

Real-time scanning

All the features can be easily accessed with just a few clicks. By clicking on the “Device” button, you can access various security settings including real-time scanning options, PC optimizer, and mute mode which temporarily disables notifications from Trend Micro.

Privacy Scanner and Social Media Protection

The “Privacy” button on the main UI allows you to navigate to the Privacy Scanner and Social Media Protection. Additionally, you can configure your Pay Guard settings here, such as selecting which websites should open in Trend Micro’s secure web browser.

Data Theft Prevention

Finally, the Data Theft Prevention options are also available from the “Privacy” tab. As with Pay Guard, all you have to do is enter the information you want to be protected, and Trend Micro will handle the rest automatically.

Data Protection Costumization

The “Data” button provides access to a range of data protection features. Within this section, you can utilize the Folder Shield, Secure Erase, password manager (which opens a web extension), and Vault tools (which creates a password-protected folder). Furthermore, the “Family” button grants access to the Parental Controls, which I found quick and easy to configure. Overall, Trend Micro’s interface is user-friendly and straightforward to navigate. This enables users to effortlessly access and customize each feature with just a few clicks.

Trend Micro Mobile App

Trend Micro provides reliable mobile security for Android and iOS devices. This protection is available as part of the Maximum Security and Premium Security Suite packages, or it can be purchased separately. The features included in this package are as follows:

  • Malware scanner (Android only).
  • Web protections.
  • SMS phishing (smishing) blocker.
  • App manager.
  • Anti-theft protection.
  • Parental controls.

Smishing Blocker Feature

During my testing, I found the malware scanner to be highly effective. I purposely downloaded an archive containing numerous virus samples onto my Huawei P30 Lite Android phone, and Trend Micro successfully detected almost all of them. The mobile web protections are also impressive, with a standout feature being the smishing blocker which effectively prevents SMS-based phishing attempts. In fact, it performs just as well as the one found in Norton’s mobile app.

Trend Micro’s Lost Device Portal

I am particularly fond of Trend Micro’s theft protection features. With this software, you have the ability to remotely lock your device, erase your data, track its location using GPS, and activate an alarm. Additionally, if someone attempts to unlock the app with an incorrect PIN, Trend Micro will send you an email containing a picture of the person. In case of theft, you can access these functions by visiting Trend Micro’s Lost Device portal on your web browser and logging into your account. The user interface for all these anti-theft features is extremely user-friendly, and the “locate device” function can accurately pinpoint your device within a range of approximately 50-100 feet.

Functionality Parental Controls

The functionality of the parental controls on the mobile app is similar to that of the desktop app. However, there are a couple of differences. Firstly, you cannot schedule usage times like you can on the PC version. Secondly, there is no report screen available to track your children’s app and internet usage. If you wish to schedule usage times on your mobile device, you will need to find an alternative solution. In general, I am quite impressed with Trend Micro’s mobile app. It offers strong anti-malware protections, web protections, and powerful anti-theft capabilities.

Trend Micro Customer Support

Trend Micro’s customer support provides various options, including:

  • Comprehensive knowledge base.
  • Phone support.
  • Live chat.
  • Email support.
  • Social media/forum support.

Extensive Impression

The extensive and easy-to-use knowledge base left a strong impression on me. Within it, I found numerous well-crafted articles that provided answers to many of my inquiries. Furthermore, the phone support is of exceptional quality. For individuals in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and more than twelve other countries, there are various options available for weekday support as well as 24/7 premium support for subscribers of Trend Micro’s Premium Security Suite.

Standard Support

I quickly reached out to standard support from Canada and engaged in a chat with a helpful agent who addressed all of my inquiries. Connecting with the live chat agent was a breeze, taking only a minute, although it did take some time for my questions to be resolved. The agent promptly inquired about my issue and offered to initiate a remote session. Although it took over an hour, we ultimately managed to resolve the VPN issue.

Customer Service Representative

When I sent an email, a customer service representative replied within 9 hours, which is quite impressive in terms of speed. Unfortunately, they weren’t very helpful. I asked if it was possible to view the websites accessed by my child through parental controls, to which they responded by asking for a screenshot and serial number. It was evident that they were simply following a script.

In general, the prompt and knowledgeable customer support team (especially the phone support) provided excellent assistance. However, the knowledge base only consists of a small number of frequently asked questions.

Can Trend Micro Fully Protect You From Malware in 2023?

Certainly, Trend Micro offers comprehensive protection against malware. Its advanced malware scanner ensures nearly 100% protection from malware, and its web shield effectively identifies all potentially harmful websites during my testing. Additionally, Trend Micro includes several useful additional features such as a privacy scanner to safeguard your social media accounts and basic parental controls that allow you to easily manage your child’s online time and device usage. However, there are certain aspects of Trend Micro that I find less favorable. The system tune-up tools did not meet my expectations, and the VPN and password manager features are comparatively basic when compared to leading standalone providers.

Trend Micro Antivirus Advanced AI Learning Technology

Trend Micro Antivirus software is known for its consistently good performance in tests. It is highly regarded for its ability to effectively detect, block, and remove malware while having minimal impact on system performance. The software utilizes advanced AI learning technology that is cloud-based to identify and combat new and emerging malware infections and attacks, ensuring the protection of your devices.

Safeguards Your Financial Data Capabilities

In addition to its malware detection and protection capabilities, it also includes a Pay Guard feature that safeguards your financial data when using Windows 10, Chrome, Firefox, and other Internet Explorer browsers. In comparison to other antivirus providers, the software performs admirably. It also provides a comprehensive range of parental controls, a feature typically found in pricier alternatives. Therefore, we would suggest considering it for your antivirus protection needs.

While it is competitively priced, the various plan options may be somewhat perplexing. Other antivirus programs not only offer exceptional malware protection but also include additional security tools such as secure VPNs, which are not included by default in Trend Micro.

Can Trend Micro be trusted?

Absolutely, Trend Micro is a reliable option for ensuring your security. I personally conducted a comprehensive analysis of their antivirus scanner, pitting it against close to 1,000 malware samples, and it demonstrated an impressive detection rate of nearly 100%. Nonetheless, if safeguarding your privacy is of utmost importance to you, it’s worth noting that Trend Micro does gather data on your malware detection records – a practice commonly employed by antivirus developers. The purpose behind this data collection is to aid Trend Micro in promptly identifying and addressing new threats. However, should you desire to maintain complete privacy over your data, you have the option to opt out of this data collection process.

During my evaluation of its real-time protection, I purposely attempted to download several keylogger malware files, and Trend Micro successfully detected and blocked all of them, preventing any harm from occurring. It is worth noting that Trend Micro does not include additional keylogging protections such as an on-screen keyboard. If this specific feature is something you require, alternative options should be considered.

Will Trend Micro work with Windows Defender?

Yes, when Trend Micro is active, most of the features of Windows Defender will be disabled. This is actually beneficial because it prevents multiple malware scanners from conflicting with each other, which could potentially endanger your device. However, it is important to note that Trend Micro’s Firewall Booster does work alongside Windows Defender’s built-in firewall to provide an extra level of protection.

Is Trend Micro free?

No, Trend Micro’s antivirus products are not available for free. However, all of Trend Micro’s plans offer a 30-day trial period and a 30-day money-back guarantee. This means that you have the opportunity to try out Trend Micro and ensure it is the right fit for you before making a long-term commitment. If you are in search of a free antivirus program (although I do not typically recommend this), I suggest considering Avira.

Is Trend Micro legit?

Certainly, Trend Micro provides trustworthy antivirus safeguarding for both Windows and Mac devices. It delivers dependable real-time defense and an extensive range of security characteristics.

Bottom Line

Trend Micro is a reliable antivirus software that offers useful additional features. During my tests, it successfully detected a majority of the malware files, and its extra privacy features and anti-theft options provide solid protection for your devices both online and offline. However, Trend Micro does not have certain advanced features that are offered by other competing brands, such as comprehensive reporting in the parental controls. Nevertheless, I would recommend Trend Micro to those who are seeking a user-friendly antivirus solution at an affordable price. If you require the most extensive online security measures, though, you may want to consider other options.
