Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (Digital)

Cliolink returns as the iconic superspy, Ethan Hunt, in the highly anticipated seventh installment of the blockbuster franchise. Titled Dead Reckoning Part One, this film marks the beginning of an exciting two-part saga. Joining Hunt on his thrilling missions are his trusted teammates: Benji Dunn (played by Simon Pegg) and Luther Stickell (portrayed by Ving Rhames). Prepare yourself for an adrenaline-fueled experience filled with exhilarating car chases, daring stunts, and intricately choreographed fight scenes that will leave you captivated.

In this latest adventure, the team is traveling all over the world in pursuit of two keys that, when united, provide entry to a dangerous artificial intelligence known as “the Entity.” Almost every country in the world is competing to obtain this object, and even someone from Hunt’s past re-emerges as a contender. While the plot may seem far-fetched, it hardly makes a difference when the film is incredibly enjoyable.

The Burial (Prime Video)

Jamie Foxx brings his undeniable charisma to The Burial, a film that seamlessly transitions from heart-stopping action to a captivating courtroom drama. In this role, Foxx portrays Willie Gary, a wealthy and flamboyant attorney based in Florida. This legal dramedy, which is loosely inspired by a true story, follows Willie as he represents the financially struggling local business owner (portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones) of a funeral home in Mississippi.

Their goal is to challenge a large corporate “deathcare” giant. Alongside the two lead actors, there is an exceptional supporting cast including Jurnee Smollett as Gary’s counterpart on the defense and Bill Camp as the antagonist, a corrupt corporate executive who poses a threat to the family business. While this film may seem like the typical David vs. Goliath story that you’ve probably seen before, its clever writing and outstanding performances have the potential to captivate you nonetheless.

Beetlejuice (Max)

Max has the Tim Burton classic, Beetlejuice musical, available just in time for Halloween, which has been generating attention for surprising reasons. However, it’s important to act swiftly as it will no longer be available on the streaming service after October concludes. Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis portray Adam and Barbara Maitland, a recently deceased couple who are cursed to haunt their old home for the next 125 years.

When Charles Deetz (played by Jeffrey Jones), Delia Deetz (played by Catherine O’Hara), and Lydia Deetz (played by Winona Ryder) unexpectedly move in and transform their house into a vibrant nightmare, they enlist the help of Michael Keaton’s Betelgeuse (pronounced Beetlejuice), a creepy ghoul who eats bugs and acts as a “bio-exorcist,” to frighten them away. The peculiar characters and peculiar, gothic visuals have transformed this eerie comedy into a beloved cult classic. It is certainly worth revisiting during this spooky season.

Sicario (Prime Video)

Denis Villeneuve, who later directed Dune and Blade Runner 2049, achieved great success with one of his earlier ventures in Hollywood: Sicario. This captivating crime thriller features a talented cast including Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin. The film tells a gripping story set against the backdrop of an intensifying drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Following a fatal incident during a raid on a safe house belonging to the Sonora Cartel, FBI agent Kate Macer (Blunt) becomes a member of a covert government team led by mysterious CIA agent Matt Graver (Brolin) and Mexican operative Alejandro Gillick (Del Toro). As Kate becomes more involved in their risky missions to apprehend the cartel’s top figures, she starts to question her own moral values and whether the desired outcomes are worth the methods employed.

It Follows (Netflix)

Netflix is bringing back It Follows, a highly acclaimed horror movie from the past decade, just in time for the spooky season. The movie’s premise is both simple and terrifying: a supernatural entity relentlessly pursues its victims. However, instead of hiding in typical places like under beds or in corners, this monster chooses to follow its victims disguised as anyone they encounter.

This unique aspect of the story adds an element of tension to the film’s beautifully shot wide scenes, as every background character becomes a potential threat. The only means of escaping this curse is by passing it on through sexual intercourse with another person, presenting protagonist Jay (played by Maika Monroe) with an impossible decision. In addition to its chilling storyline, It Follows also possesses an eerie timelessness.

The presence of peculiar technology and gadgets throughout the film creates a sense of both familiarity and foreignness, removing it from any specific point on the timeline. Furthermore, the characters’ lack of modern slang contributes to the movie’s ambiguous time period, making it feel neither modern nor old-fashioned.

Renfield

Experience Nicolas Cage like never before in this contemporary monster story. Nicholas Hoult takes on the role of Renfield, the loyal servant of Dracula, portrayed by Cage. After enduring centuries of servitude under the most terrible boss imaginable, Renfield embarks on a journey to seek a new life away from his master’s influence.

Renfield delivers a well-crafted absurdity that, despite its 93-minute duration, avoids overstaying its welcome. Although Cage takes on a secondary role to Hoult’s Renfield character, he effortlessly steals the spotlight in every scene he appears in, showcasing his fangs, exaggerated gestures, and an outlandish vampire costume.

Fair Play

Emily and Luke, portrayed by Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich respectively, are a successful couple who both hold positions at a competitive financial company in New York. Despite their recent engagement being kept under wraps, their relationship is put to the test when they find themselves vying for the same sought-after promotion. As the balance of power shifts in both their personal and professional lives, it becomes evident that the pursuit of success comes with a high cost, as both individuals reveal an unsettling ambition for achievement.

Easy A

Easy A is considered to be on par with Mean Girls and Clueless in the realm of teen comedies. Although Emma Stone had made appearances in a few films prior to her starring role in Easy A, it was this movie that propelled her into becoming a rising star. Even just from watching the trailer, it’s evident why this is the case. Stone’s humor, wit, and commanding presence on screen are noticeable without being overpowering, allowing her to effectively interact with other cast members.

Emma Stone portrays the character of Olive Penderghast, a 17-year-old high school student who, after spreading a small untruth about her sexual experience, fully embraces the resulting reputation as the promiscuous girl in school and the advantages that come with it. At one point, she even goes as far as wearing an actual scarlet letter, which is a reference to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s well-known novel.

District 9

Normally, I’m not particularly fond of science fiction, but District 9 is a rare exception. One of the reasons for this is its unique premise. Although the film revolves around extraterrestrial refugees from a planet on the brink of destruction who have settled on Earth, it also manages to tackle thought-provoking themes such as xenophobia and social division in a surprisingly realistic manner. Interestingly enough, this movie, helmed by South African director Neill Blomkamp, draws inspiration from actual events that took place in District Six of Cape Town during the apartheid era.

Similar to apartheid, the individuals in power in District 9 are not the heroes. Despite his seemingly good intentions, bumbling bureaucrat Wikus van de Merwe (played by Sharlto Copley) works for a monstrous weapons manufacturer responsible for confining the aliens to a camp outside the city. Even he treats the aliens of District 9 as inferior beings. However, everything changes when he unintentionally exposes himself to a mysterious substance that alters his body and transforms his outlook on life.

With so many movies available to stream on platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Max, it can be overwhelming to decide what to watch. But fear not!
